Sorry about the 1980’s, but
I hear you’re in technology, and
Pittsburgh is doing much better now;
Not just steel and bridge city
there’s job mobility
without dependence on industry, and
woot, woot! Pittsburghers live the dream
more-so than others in your vast country;
Took a virtual walk down to Bakery Square
to ogle none other than that behemoth searcher,
the one that goes after more and better bread,
and where Nabisco once baked to boot.
By night, you sparkle like New York, but
wave your black and yellow like a whiz,
sail it through the air like an eagle
over Frick Park’s woody slopes & vales;
sail it for capital gains, or against,
so long as you come up green, P.
Some say you’re married to smoke stacks;
But in the birthplace of republicans
you grow democrats —
What greater sign of possibilities?
No longer “hell with the lid off”
your clean air is good to breathe,
and so fine an example
Beijing would love to follow.
No, it ain’t Paris, but
those who know the 4-1-2 say you are
the Paris of Appalachia, and you
turned miles of rails to rec trails;
And in winter you love your penguins.
This spring, when everything says live,
like your mountains soft with pink laurels,
and trout in clear, cold water streams,
do, join in Pennsylvania, and watch
the world bow to you in thanks.
